Diwali greetings!

Diwali is celebrated with tiny lamps called diyas, lit and placed in people’s homes signifying light overcoming darkness. Diwali is the brightest and most joyous of celebrations in India and it is a time when new beginnings are embraced, people let go of the past and ask for blessings of prosperity and spiritual wealth for the coming year.

Diwali translates to

Diwali translates to “a row of lights” and signifies light over darkness.

Hello and Happy 2014! I can’t believe another year is already here…

A deliciously chocolately treat…for a treat day!

Recently with the cold temperatures and some crazy flu going around (H1N1), I’ve been stocking up on turmeric, adding ‘a pinch here and pinch there’ to all my cooking. Also, my Ayurvedic Turmeric Milk recipe for cold and flu is coming in handy. I’m taking this daily to ward off any scratchy throats which are just painfully annoying! When we become sick even with the wimpiest cold or flu, it takes away precious time (sometimes even weeks) from doing the things we love, from feeling vibrant with full energy and loving every single day of our lives. Now as I ‘knock on wood’ and slap back a turmeric shot I’m hoping to make it through another season without catching anything. If we’re talking about resolutions, one thing I did resolve to do is – don’t forget the turmeric!

Chai Spice Medjool Date mitai using Arvinda’s Chai Masala

Over the weekend we celebrated Diwali, India’s festival of lights. The celebrations are vibrant, joyous and lit with illuminated tiny lamps called diyas. It is a custom to cook many varieties of snacks and sweets and share them with loved ones.

Although this is the only time of year we eat specific Indian sweets (this is definitely a time of year for treats!) I wanted to make something different as well as “healthy”, if you can call a sweet treat that! Maybe the word I’m looking for is healthier than the typical syrupy and overly sugary Indian mithai (sweets) we often indulge in.

Can I just say, sheer decadence can be captured in a cup of Shrikhand, a Gujarati dessert of strained yogurt spiced with cardamom and other Chai spices. A spoonful of this heavenly dessert can always put me in a good mood.

Just give me a reason and I will make this dessert in a moment’s notice!

I’m not one to usually remember my dreams. Of course, dreaming happens every night for all of us in any of the four stages of sleep. But remembering them for some is not always easy, let alone experience the wonders of having a lucid dream – something I’m working on! From what I hear lucid dreaming is a beautiful thing.
